"We support off road racing as our area benefits greatly from the economic impact that these races bring." Melissa Newton, director of the Parker Regional Chamber of Commerce & Tourism, said that to the Parker Pioneer in 2023, after permits came through for the races to return. The same article listed what came with race weekend. Visitors filled motel rooms and RV parks, and the Downtown Experience, a big street fair and "show and shine," took over downtown Parker.
Three years later, the race is still here. The street party has moved. Parker's winter calendar for 2026-27 now centers on a race whose most public piece took place in Lake Havasu City in January 2026. Organizers have not yet said where it lands next.
How race week ended up back on the calendar
Parker's race goes back a long way. The organizer traces the Parker 400 to the 1971 "Dam 500." SCORE then ran it under the Parker 400 name, and Best in the Desert operated the Parker races for about two decades after that. The Parker Pioneer puts Best in the Desert's run at 2003 onward, after it took over from Whiplash Motorsports.
Then 2023 went blank. Much of the course sits on land managed by the Bureau of Land Management, and the BLM declined to issue permits that year. According to the Parker Pioneer, the operations plan had not resolved the agency's concerns from the year before, including "spectator management." For 2024, the permit for the Parker 400 went to Matt and Josh Martelli, who run the Mint 400. A second Parker race went to Legacy Racing.
By 2026 the Parker 400 was part of a bigger series. The American Off-Road Racing Championship, or AORC, brought UNLTD Off-Road Racing and Best in the Desert together under one points championship. The Parker 400 is the first race on that schedule.
January 2026 split race week in two
The race site was direct about the change. "New for 2026, Tech & Contingency for the Parker 400 has relocated to Lake Havasu City." Organizers said the goal was to copy the fan-focused setup of the Mint 400's Fremont Street format, which they credit with much of that race's public profile. Race teams checked in at a staging lot behind Ken's Pizza on Mesquite Avenue. They unloaded on McCulloch Boulevard at Acoma Boulevard, and registration ran at Main Street Commons.
That moved the public side of race week out of town. The racing itself stayed in the desert around Parker. Here is where each part of the 2026 week took place, according to the official schedule and organizer pages:
| Race week piece, January 2026 | Where it happened |
|---|---|
| Open pre-running, Tuesday and Wednesday | Course around Parker |
| Qualifying registration, Wednesday | Parker Motor Co. |
| Tech and contingency, Off-Road Festival | McCulloch Boulevard, downtown Lake Havasu City |
| Qualifying | Standard Wash Area, BLM campground |
| Youth and limited racing Friday, motorcycles and unlimited Saturday | Parker course |
| Free spectating, no tickets or passes | Upper Shea Road |
| Awards ceremony, Sunday | Bluewater Resort |
So race week still reached Parker at both ends. Pre-runners were out on the course early in the week, the Upper Shea Road spectator area was free, and the season wrapped at Bluewater on Sunday. The BLM's temporary closure notice restricted or closed public land in and around the course from 11:59 p.m. Jan. 12 through 11:59 p.m. Jan. 18, 2026. That notice covered access to public land, not a specific paved road.
What's known about January 2027
AORC announced its 2027 schedule on Sept. 3, 2026. The Parker 400 is set for January 13–17, 2027, in Parker, followed by the Mint 400 in Las Vegas on March 3–7. Organizers haven't published a 2027 week schedule, a tech and contingency location or a spectator map yet. The BLM closure window and the Upper Shea Road setup from January 2026 applied to that race only.
So the most important question for Parker's January, where the festival goes, doesn't have an answer yet. Everything else on the winter calendar does.
The season already started in the Buckskins
Parker's desert season doesn't start with the race. It starts each fall when the Desert Bar opens, and this is its 43rd season. On Saturday, Sept. 19, the off-grid saloon in the Buckskin Mountains held a soft opening. The Parker Regional Chamber of Commerce & Tourism did a ribbon-cutting and a raffle, Lake Havasu City band Mile High played, and visitors tried food from the bar's new vendor, The Dusty Boot Cookhouse. Today's News-Herald reported burgers, wraps and hot sides on the menu. The official season opener followed on Oct. 3 and 4, with doors at 11 a.m. and The Substitutes playing at noon.
The Lake Havasu tourism directory gives the usual season as October through April, Saturdays and Sundays, noon to sundown. It adds that some holidays get openings and the owners can change the schedule. The listed route goes south on AZ-95 to Cienega Springs Road. That road is unpaved, narrow and rough in spots, and the back way in is a remote 4WD route. For the latest hours, the paper points readers to the bar's Facebook page.
The motorsport season also started early. On Saturday, Oct. 24, the 2026 Blue Water Resort & Casino–BIT Pros Parker Enduro ran out of Blue Water at 11300 Resort Drive.
From now until the race, it's all in town
With the race festival's location unknown, the rest of the calendar is close to home and on fixed dates:
- Oct. 31, 5–9 p.m. The Town of Parker's Trunk-or-Treat at Pop Harvey Park, 917 S. Mohave Ave., with games, pumpkin and costume contests, food trucks, films and Wildman Phil.
- Sundays in November. Bluewater's Season of Serving gift giveaways on Nov. 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29.
- Nov. 7. The Town's annual Veterans Day Parade. The Town hasn't posted a time, route or meeting point yet.
- Nov. 7, 7–10 p.m. Los Rieleros del Norte at Bluewater, the same day as the parade.
- Every weekend, October through April. The Desert Bar, per its typical season listing.
- January 13–17, 2027. The Parker 400.
Pop Harvey Park, the Halloween venue, is also in line for new playground equipment. In January the Town announced an $87,793 state grant, matched dollar for dollar with Town funds. The announcement didn't include an installation date.
After January, the fairgrounds take over
Once the race leaves, the next big date is the La Paz County Fair, set for March 11–13, 2027, according to the fair's site. That puts the fair in the last few weeks of the Desert Bar's typical season, before the river crowds come back.
The race is what makes this winter different. Every other date on Parker's calendar is set and local, from the Buckskins to Pop Harvey Park to Bluewater. The Parker 400 is the one event with a location still unannounced. In January 2026, the racing, the free spectating and the awards stayed around Parker, while the festival that once filled downtown Parker ran on McCulloch Boulevard. Watch the race's news page for the 2027 tech and contingency announcement. It decides whether downtown Parker gets its race-week street scene back in January 2027.
The Modern Desert Group keeps up with Parker's calendar for the same reason the Chamber does, because the busy weeks matter to anyone who owns here. Let's talk timing if you're thinking about listing a riverfront or desert property before race week fills the RV parks, or if you want a quick sale over the quiet stretch after it. Make a bold move and request a cash offer or strategic listing plan from The Modern Desert Group.
